We live in a society that believes more is better. Why get a regular cup of Coke when you can get a Big Gulp? Why settle for a simple ring tone when you can have your college fight song ring each time a classmate calls AND have their picture appear on your phone? Do you ever feel maybe less is better?
I recently took a trip to China and left my cell phone and laptop behind. It caused me to reflect on the information overload we experience in our daily lives. From Blackberries to TiVo to Wi-Fi we never miss a beat. The China Daily and CNN were the only conduits I had to news from the West. How would I survive?
I’ve traveled to countries before where I did not speak the language, but the Chinese characters make it extremely difficult to order a meal, give directions to a taxi driver, etc. After day one, I realized that I was better off communicating with less. I honed my Pictionary skills for meals and kept my phrase book on me at all times. I am proud to say I never got lost and always managed to draw my way to a meal I could eat.
We live in a society that never sleeps and are continually bombarded with information. While in China, I realized I could keep up to date with CNN’s streamlined news and communicate with fewer words. It was actually a welcome escape from the 24/7 media blitz that continually over communicates with society. I am not saying that all information is not important. What I am saying is that all information is not important to everyone; it must be tailored to the audience. Hence you have media outlets like ESPN for the sports enthusiasts and HGTV for the home and gardener.
