Yes, you can go off the grid, however, you would have to produce sufficient power to meet your electrical needs, store the excess for non windy days, and have a back up system, like a generator if you wished as well. There are dealer who can help you figure out you ’Wind Class, kilowatt usage and a system that may be a combination of wind, solar, geothermal etc. In the Northern Plains we typically have sufficient wind to power a wind turbine at optimum levels. It makes sense to have an alternate source of electricity that is earth-friendly. The one and only obstacle I see is the cost of installation. Even if you are in an area that allows a tax credit, it is still a lot of money to come up with "up front". Has anyone ever considered a pay-by-the-month plan so this can be affordable to everyone? Even if you take out a loan to pay for the installation, you end up paying finance charges (which again, adds to the bottom line). If you could devise a way where customers could get a Skystream installed with little or no fee, you would then get their monthly electric payment instead of the electric company.
